The future of U.S. Steel in Clairton was once again in the spotlight as state and local officials came together for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mon Valley Works Clairton Coke Plant C Battery.

The groundbreaking Wednesday signaled the official beginning of the $1.2 billion project, the largest capital investment program in U.S. Steel’s history.

“This project will enhance the future competitiveness of our company, benefit our employees and retirees, as well as the many suppliers, customers and communities that rely on the long-term viability of the Clairton plant and Mon Valley Works,” said John Surma, chairman and CEO of U.S. Steel.

Gov. Ed Rendell heralded the project as good news for a struggling economy.
